Hay, Jacob - Root Cellar
May Day Township
This arched cave is built into a mound just northeast of a two story mixed stone/woodhouse and south of a barn. The cave was apparently used more as a smokehouse and meat locker based on the story of current land owner and backed up by the features of the cave. These include large rails across ceiling for hanging meat, double windows for ventilation and a place for blood to drain on floor. This cave as well as that of Swan Isaacson and John Dettmer all seemed to have shared a similar style and size which would indicate the same mason as their builder. The cave opens to the east and measures 18'(L)x11'(W)x7.5'(H).
